Tunnel Words

There are tunnels 

under the streets 

where people like me 

tend to place their feet

one in front of the other

far from the others 

above us 

they love us 

when we willingly 

walk on eggshells

when we let well enough alone

when our voices 

are whispers 

we have an abundance 

of spirit 

but they 

must never hear it 

they can use 

abuse it 

profit 

stop it

from ever letting us 

getting ahead of ourselves

but they will never 

agree to let it be ours 

we need to be cowered 

to seem agreeable

to be deemed 

the right kind of person 

as we are pressed into the earth 

with ever present grins

on dim faces

wasted

never does seem feasible 

but its the truth for us 

it's this or the noose for us 

its people as products 

when they have the use for us 

some of us though 

can't be contained beneath these streets

we breathe too deep 

we see that we 

are more than the position 

we've been placed in

we are not willing to be complacent

we are no longer waiting

for someone else 

to decide how, when, or why

we should exist 

there are tunnels under the streets 

and we resist 

we insist 

that we belong 

only beneath 

the sun 

there are tunnels under the streets

filled with the hope 

of people 

rising 

to break 

free

to be more than we were lead to believe

we could become 

tunnels crumble around us 

while we rise 

leveling the field 

of view 

and we see greatness 

in our eyes
