We were bones

early on

bare of flesh

and blood

and the great strength

of tempered muscle

but still

we were something,

a frame

from which

we built upon

and in this composition

we felt the pain

of falling

on

these bare bones

the chill

of regret

on

these bare bones

we spoke

in whispers

through

teeth

and ached

for the softness

of lips

and the beating

of hearts

inside

these

bare bones

we fought

hard like these bones

and loved hard as these bones

and slowly

life touched its magic

and we

felt the beginnings

stir inside

as we built upon each other

as veins and muscles

swept around us

as our thoughts

became our eyes

and we saw each other

time passed

and danced

with this love

and kissed

the bones

that we were

and made us flesh

all at once

our hearts beat

in unison

and we were one
