Healing Words

 

It comes and goes

in waves

the way

I feel

about the last few years 

and tears 

can't fall

fast enough

to wash away 

the traces 

of what was 

it does 

on occasion 

occur to me

that we 

made many mistakes

biting breaks

to the skin 

with the ugly 

words 

we spit

and just like that

we're in 

not love

but something 

close enough

to make 

us think 

we should 

try it one more time

cause we're 

running 

out of time 

running 

ragged 

trying to 

wrap our heads 

around 

the fact 

that we put in 

way too many 

years 

for this thing

here 

not to be 

exactly what 

we needed 

hearts 

hard 

yet somehow 

still bleeding 

and on the bright side

maybe it means

we're still alive

still needing 

over for us 

but maybe not 

for love

so we scrape ourselves

off the floor 

reassemble 

remember 

the old us 

fold us 

up neat 

into waiting suitcases 

wave us goodbye 

hugs 

nods 

such a struggle 

not to cry 

but I see the spark 

in your eye

you need this 

and I believe this 

is for the best 

it's why we met 

I guess 

for lessons 

left 

impressions

kept

somewhere safe 

inside us 

to remind us 

of the things 

we almost 

didn't give ourselves

the chance to taste

it takes 

years they say 

for scars

to heal 

still tender

in the place 

where we press 

fingers 

feel 

fresh 

on those occasions

when we wonder

about 

our expectations

but we focus

on the wound 

not the who 

not the reasons 

they exist 

just how 

best 

to move on 

to heal
