In Between Words

It’s only a couple

Hundred miles

And everything

In between

Today

And the days

That came

Before

That’s all

That separates

Us

Just

Life

Just

A road

A picket fence

The wicked sense

Of humor

Humans

Find

In happenstance

Cause why

Would I

Ever dream

Of tasting fruit

Too far up

On branches

Why does my tongue

Tell me

To take chances

On the eve

Of forbidden

Fanciful romances

How come

He

Doesn’t live

Across the street

Doesn’t take

A lot to see

That wanting

Doesn’t make it

Meant to be

I count the miles

In my head

Multiply it by

The other set of limbs

In his bed

And then add to that

That he is in fact

In love

And it doesn’t take much

To see that we

Don’t add up

And that’s

Just my luck

And I instead will

Trust

That life

Will offer me

Something

Sweet

Between

Here and the miles

That I

Have left

To walk

So these empty places

In me

Find

Themselves

Well acquainted

With something close

To what he’s tasting

A million miles away

Looking at her smile

Dreaming of her face

In between

The things we want

We hold on

To reasons

We should stay

So I keep

My eyes open

Hoping

For my own

For the moment

That I

No longer need

To roam

Along

The lines

To find

The things I need

Cause mine is likely

Waiting

Somewhere in between
